Carpenter Browntone/ Carpenter and Casey Reel
This is an extremely rare rod and reel combination. The rod is an 8 foot, 3/3, Browntone model signed W E Carpenter, Maker. The cap and band reel seat is also marked W E Carpenter and the reel seat insert is a dark walnut burl, the cork grip a 5.5 inch cigar shape. It has a winding check and a strap and ring hook keeper. All the hardware, including the ferrules, are oxidized. The wraps are a dark, Payne style brown with black trim and the cane is nicely flamed with darker highlights. It is an exquisite rod and a delight to cast with a 5 weight DT. All sections, including the three tips have the serial number 26880. One tip is an inch short. The ferrules are size 15 and 10 and fit tightly. The labeled rod tube is original with polished brass caps. The bag is original as well with five sections to accommodate the 3 tips. The rod is in excellent condition with the only sign of use being light soiling of the grip.
The reel is equally treasurable, a prototype of the Carpenter and Casey reels. It too is in excellent, nearly unused, condition. It has nickel silver rims, an S shaped handle with polished brass center screw and counter balance. There is a small brass plate in the back side of the reel inscribed “W E Carpenter / Rod Co.” The spool is 2 3/4 inches with a 1 inch width. There are 3 barely discernible marks on the rims that would polish out if someone desired. It has been used a few times. and has some new backing on it.
